Birding Saguaro National Park – West

I started birding about 2 miles before the Bajada Loop drive started.  I had to be careful to pull off the road – it was windy and narrow, but there were plenty of places to stop.  The entire bird was done from the car.  Again, there are places to walk which I did not take advantage of.

My first Tucson bird was on the way to Saguaro a Brown crested Flycatcher perched on a branch.

The plant life was varied and beautiful, it was like a Forest, but with Saguaro Cactus instead of Trees.

I was very happy to have a standard size SUV because the road would have been challenging in a smaller car.  Lots of ruts and cracks and dust – had to shut the windows for a few minutes when another car passed by until the dust dissipated.

Lots of birds perched on Cacti and branches

Pyrrhuloxia

Turkey Vulture

White-Winged Dove – this bird sounds like a Barred Owl to me – “Who cooks for you”, so every time I heard it and I heard it a LOT, I thought Owl… oh no, White-winged Dove.

I drove home in the dark, but listening all the way for night birds and Owls – I got nothing…
